Go Small, Go Far

Haines and Skagway: Road Trip to SE Alaska Part 3

Skagway

Haines and Skagway are so close, yet so far away. Both towns are also so very different. We love both places, but for different reasons. Both are located in the upper reaches of Lynn Canal. The only way to get there is by taking the highway from Haines Junction or drive the Alaska Marine Highway. In other words, a gorgeous ferry trip along the upper reaches of Lynn Canal from the south edge of Lutak Inlet to Taiya Inlet. As you will discover, it is possible to visit both towns if you follow a circle route.

Skagway

We finally made it to Skagway last year to do some research about the Alaska gold rush. Walking along paths and stepping where people flocked to the gold fields inspired me. Just think, all of those miners and dreamers jumped off of their hamster wheel in search of a better life for themselves and their families. The hardships that they endured for that opportunity were immense. I think about that in our lives today. What are we willing to do to make our lives better? My hardships and risks seem so pale in comparison. So, the time visiting Skagway reminds me of the risks that our ancestors took for those hopes and dreams.

Skagway is famous for its tourism and trinket shops. If you look past the shops and think about the land and the struggles that the people endured, it is mind-blowing. The terrain is stunning on a clear day. The mountains will take your breath away. Besides the gold rush days, I also ponder the lives of indigenous peoples. The rich culture and devotion to this land is evident every day. This passion is expressed through their perseverance, artwork, and the kindness that they share with others.

Chilkoot Trail

Skagway is the starting point for the historic Chilkoot Trail. if you are interested in the Klondike Gold Rush, research the Chilkoot Trail. This world famous hike is for experienced backpackers. Plan months ahead for this hike. You will not only need to be in physical shape, but you also need to make reservations far in advance. The park service limits the number of hikers out on the trail at one time.

Haines

Haines holds a special place in my heart. We travel down to Southeast almost annually. We usually go to Haines to take the ferry further south. The people in Haines are very friendly and are passionate about their corner of the world. The Chilkat River is stunning. From the pass all the way down to Lynn Canal, you will not find a more scenic drive. The Chilkat River is the lifeblood for the people of Haines. The mountains plunge into the Lynn Canal. Just keep your eye on the road while you are gawking at the fantastic scenery. Better yet, pull over at one of the many places to read the placards and take photos.

Haines is my favorite place for hiking and getting out to enjoy the natural surroundings. Klukwan is a favorite side trip for us. The Tsimshian people are very friendly and quick to share their culture with visitors. Their hospitality is legendary. Spend some time learning about the people and their land. It will give you a deeper understanding about why Alaska is such a special place in the hearts of many!

The Road Trip

If you have some time, there are a couple of ways to see both Haines and Skagway so that you do not have to choose one over the other. We like creating circle routes. You can build a circle route and visit both Skagway and Haines. Start in Haines Junction. Take the highway to Haines. It is a one-day drive if you are in a hurry. When you go to Haines, spend time there and then take the ferry to Skagway before heading farther down to Southeast Alaska by ferry. You can go either way. One economical option is to leave the Skagway as a base camp. Walk-on to Haines and take the fast ferry to Juneau, then back to Skagway.

RV Camping at Haines and Skagway

Haines has nice RV parks, a national forest campground, and plenty of boondocking places. I love those Choices. Skagway has these as well, but it is very thin on the boondocking. If you stay at Skagway, plan on shelling out for some camping fees.

RV Camping is a bit more challenging in Skagway. Out past the Chilkoot Trail offers about the only quiet places. There are campgrounds in town, but be prepared to shell out some dollars for these prime spots.
